The White Estate tells us that Seventh-day Adventist prophetess, Ellen G. White, had 2000 visions, but they can only provide evidence for 188 in the official Index to the Writings of Ellen G. White, volume 3, pages 2978-2984.

  • Seventh-day Adventists Believe, p. 224 states "From 1844, when she 17, until 1915—the year of her death—she had more than 2,000 visions."
  • James White wrote, “She has probably had, during the past twenty-three years, between one and two hundred visions.” Life Incidents 1868, page 272. (1844-1868). This would be a yearly average of 8.6 visions per year. Arthur White comments on James White's estimate: "that this would mean an average vision once in six weeks.", Variation and Frequency of the Ellen G. White Visions, page 2. If we use James White's higher estimate of 8.6 visions per year times (1844-1915) times the 47 additional years after he died we have 404.2 average visions for the remaining 47 year period. By adding 402.2 visions to the 200 visions we now have approximately 602.2 visions from 1844 to 1915. Subtracting this from the White Estate's 2,000 visions we are missing 1397.8 visions!
  • The White Estate's Index to the Writings of Ellen G. White, volume 3, pages 2978-2984 lists about 188 visions for Ellen White.
It would be understandable if there was, for example, a ten percent margin of error for estimating. When the Seventh-day Adventist Church's guidebook on Fundamental Beliefs states without reservation that she had "more than 2,000 visions", it is reasonable to expect that about 90% of her known visions must not have been recorded in the White Estate's Index to the Writings of Ellen G. White. Below we will endeavor to complete the list.
